Pay-rise for Woody

STOKE City will consider offering Jonathan Woodgate a new and improved contract if he continues his current rate of recovery from career-threatening injury problems.

The England defender is way ahead of schedule after completing his first competitive 90 minutes for the club within a month of signing.

Woodgate is on a virtual pay-as-you-play deal after Stoke insured themselves against the 31-year-old centre-half breaking down again after playing just four games in two years at Spurs.

But the early signs suggest he is conquering long-running fitness trouble prompted by an initial groin injury, and that will persuade the club to consider his future beyond his current 12-month agreement.

Manager Tony Pulis has been astonished by Woodgate's rate of progress after gambling where most other clubs were fearing to tread.

And Pulis has quickly demonstrated his willingness to break up the successful Ryan Shawcross/Robert Huth partnership in central defence to accommodate Woodgate.
